A beautiful character-driven drama about family tensions laid bare. Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) plays an essentially good yet self-centred dad who is striving to do better after squandering his writing career and his marriage. Light, accessible and very well observed, this movie by director Hirokazu Koreeda (Our Little Sister, PIAF 2016) is full of generously beautiful detail about ordinary Japanese life.
