Top 5 Picks: Will Backler from RTRFM

Thursday 16 February 2017

RTRFM Music Coordinator Will Backler spends his days soaking up the freshest sounds in the RTRFM studio and by the stage at gigs around town.

Find out what his picks are from this year’s Chevron Festival Gardens line-up.

  1. Blackalicious with Special Guests Pow! Negro

It’s always a party when US hip-hop legends Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel play a show in Perth, with their high energy sets full of inspiring, conscious tongue-twisting classics. Add local ‘next big thing’ jazz hip-hoppers POW! Negro to the bill, and you’ve got a night of unforgettable beats and rhymes, sure to keep your head nodding long after the final line has been spit.

  1. Explosions in the Sky

Nine years after their last performance at PIAF, illustrious Texan post-rock outfit Explosions in the Sky return to blow minds and break hearts with their iconic, intense instrumental soundscapes. Prepare for a sonic sojourn driven by the four-piece’s emotional tones, as they demonstrate their mastery of not only their instruments, but also of affecting compositions.

  1. Jambinai + Gold Class

Expect an all-out instrumental assault from South Korean experimental group Jambinai, as they bring their intense, metal influenced brand of post-rock to Perth for the first time. Their unique sound is driven by vigorous playing of traditional Korean stringed instruments the haegeum and the geomungo, resulting in distinctive timbres bursting out of the mix. With Melbourne indie rockers Gold Class along for the ride, a night of alternative rocking sounds awaits.

  1. Kishi Bashi + Teeth & Tongue

Multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Kishi Bashi makes bright, electronic tinged kaleidoscopic indie-pop that can change direction on a whim, with an air of uncertainty that makes it all that much more exciting. Catch this translated to a live setting, with Melbourne 80s synth-pop revivalists Teeth & Tongue, the perfect accompaniment.

  1. Warpaint with special guest Gabriella Cohen

The LA-based quartet return to Perth for what is sure to be another blistering live show of luscious, experimental, melody-rich indie rock, hot on the heels of their new LP Heads Up, which saw them infusing influences from recent hip-hop and R&B trends with their signature brand of moody rock. Special guest on the night is Melbourne lo-fi pop songstress Gabriella Cohen on her first trip to Perth before she goes on to conquer the music world.
